23 ABRIL IN CATALONIA DIADA DE SANT JORDI

BARCELONA; 18 april 2010.

Barcelona and all over Catalunya, 23 abril diada de Sant Jordi.

La Diada de Sant Jordi in Catalunya is like Valentine's Day in others countries. Sant Jordi, Saint George, is the patron saint of Catalunya, as he is of England. His day 23 April is the day the rose and book, when traditionally men give women roses and women give men books. In these enlightened times, however normal practice is for both sex to be given roses and books. It is of course a big day for florist and the book trade. Flower stalls all have special displays of red roses and an endless supply of them individually wrapped. The major bookshops set up stalls on streets, which are full throughout the day with eager buyers, and this is an important day for local authors to keep in touch with their readers through book signings. On April 23 the Catalan government's headquarters LA GENERALITAT is completely open to visitors, and a display of roses is set up in one of the main halls being such a long queue that isn’t easy to get in.
